Gosh, where did the time go when items in webshops were displayed on dark, grainy and deformed pictures, with the shop owner's cat and dirty laundry somewhere in the back of the picture? Sometimes I just can't get over how much these things have changed in about ten years!

Sometimes I wonder if it's just me being biased (with all my hanging around in style/design blog spheres for too long ;)), or is it really so that we're living in some sort of 'age of pretty' right now? It seems that there are just so many beautiful things these days! I remember how happy I was as a girl when a little 'gift shop' arrived in the village where I grew up, you know with some handcrafted stuff from Indonesia and such. That already seemed so interesting and exotic to me back then...

Now sometimes it seems like every village has a cool gift & design shop, with beautiful paperware, masking tape in lots of colors, cool printed teatowels and fabulous tableware. Okay, this is probably me being biased since I don't even live in a village, but I just notice that wherever I go, I find nice shops like this and I do feel there is just so much more choice in beautifully designed little gifts and products than say ten years ago.

And if you don't have one of those little shops close to home, there are the heaps of amazing online webshops that you can turn to so easily. Like Swedish Mokkasin, a webshop (though I'd rather call it a fabshop! ;)) that looks more like an online magazine or a little style museum. Every product in the shop is accompanied by the most beautifully styled images, that really are an inspiration even if you're not buying anything. Then there's also the Mokkasin blog if you want to see more (all in Swedish, but the images speak a universal language!).

I'm curious though: do you feel the same way? Is this really a time in which there's more focus on (indie) design, visuals, craft, aesthetics? Or is it just me and my tunnel vision?

I do know that all my aunts tell me, when they for example see Rosa's clothes: 'Twenty years ago there wasn't that much choice when you wanted to dress your kid nicely or a bit differently, we only had a few department stores and one or two children's shops that were all selling the same stuff.' Do we really have that many more nice design choices these days?

@ Essie: oh, grappig, voor mijn gevoel zie ik ze nu 'overal' ;). Hier in de stad in iets van drie winkels, en verder inderdaad overal op internet, in tijdschriften... Het is misschien dan toch meer het gevoel het overal te zien dan dat het ook echt zo is!

Ik zie het precies zo..behalve dat ik eraan toe wil voegen dat de 'thrill' een beetje weg valt las je r zo veel en zo perfect gestyled van ziet. ik ga bijna terug verlangen naar de 'oenigheid' in fotografie, en dan bedoel ik niet de gestylde variant. Wat betreft de apparte kinder kleding keuze van vroeger, ik denk dat er wel een punt in zit wat je familie zegt maar ook denk ik dat we het nu gewoon veel en veel belangrijker vinden dan ze het vroeger vonden, het geeft nu status om je kind zo te kleden, vroeger was appart maar raar en wilde je liever niet te veel op vallen maar hetzelfde wat de buren hadden was de norm. Volgens mij hoor, maar misschien L#@*L ik nu ook maar uit mijn nekje :))

@ Dana: ik denk dat met alles een zekere gewenning optreedt. Als alles heel mooi gestyled/vormgegeven is dan wordt dat al snel een soort norm, en ben je er wat minder van onder de indruk. Of je gaat het 'rauwe randje' missen. Dan krijg je weer dat 'gestylede rauwe randje', een kledingstuk achteloos over een stoel gedrapeerd of een kunstig afgekloven boterham op een mooi bordje ;). Dat is natuurlijk toch weer wat anders dan die berg vuile was en die kat...

Maar ik kan er nog steeds wel erg van genieten, van mooi vormgegeven;).

Ik kan er ook van genieten, gelukkig wel, want een leven zonder ik wil het me niet eens voorstellen. Maar soms vind ik toch de schoonheid het meest terug in dat rauwe randje wat niet gestyled is, maar echt 'puur per ongeluk & vergeten', dat in combinatie met iets heel moois kan net die zogenaamde 'thrill' geven die ik dezer dagen echt begin te missen. ik was net al gaan slapen en had de computer al uit gezet maar bedacht me dat ik wat ik zei over status en mooie geklede kindjes maar beter even kon nuanceren. Ik kwam misschien wat te fel uit de bocht, omdat ik er zelf een soort ervaring mee heb in mijn jeugd. Mijn moeder maakte namelijk al onze kleding zelf, nu zou zij de 'super Indie moeder' zijn, maar toen schaamde ik me (helaas)rot als ik weer in een zelf gehaakte patchwork jas die ze met planten uit de tuin had geverfd in 10 verschillende kleuren rosa met daaronder een bloemtjes rok en gele houten klompen aan mijn voeten met dikke geiten wollen sokken daar weer in naar school moest. Nu zou dat voor heel relaxed 'kunstenaars hip' doorgaan, toen wilde ik graag net zo zijn als de saaie en gewone buur kinderen. Nu denk ik daar heeeeel anders over en zou ik willen dat ik er toen meer van had genoten want het was eigenlijk hartstikke cool :) liefs Dana en welteruste...

@ Dana: valt best mee hoor, die felheid! ;)

Ik ben er zelf helemaal geen voorstander van hoor, om de kunstenaarsmoeder uit te blijven hangen terwijl het kind gewoon graag onopvallend wil zijn. Dat mag ook best...

Maar hee,dit is eigenlijk meer een discussieonderwerp voor hier!

I wholeheartedly agree and I have reflected on the same subject myself many times. I think with all things, including design and craft, there is a natural evolution that pushes the bar and I think with the advent of the internet and it's global community it has accelerated that push. When I was a little girl I always loved the exotic in faraway countries and always imagined a big melting pot of design incorporating all of their beauty, sometimes I see that melting pot happening now during this 'Age of Pretty'. I agree with Angela... the internet really has opened the world up both for creative people like you but also for people buying creative things. Also professional photo equipment has become so much cheaper, making it possible for "ordinary people" to take pictures that would have cost a fortune to produce just 20 years ago. So maybe beautiful things have always been around - only now everyone has got access to means of publicising them that only large corporations had before.
