Have a look!

Illustrator Soetkine Aps

When we're on a city trip abroad, Helmut and I both have our own 'shopping recipe': I like to visit all kinds of nice and surprising art/craft/design/interior shops, while he has to check out each book shop we encounter. Even when we are in a country where books are published in a language that he doesn't understand a word of, we still have to visit each book shop 'because they might have something in the English book section that could be interesting'. (The English book section usually is the same shelf with Dan Brown pockets and some chicklit everywhere, but whatever... It's the hunting that counts, isn't it?)

Though I'm not that interested in English bestseller pockets, I'm hardly ever bored when I accompany Helmut on one of his book shop visits, because a lot of books can always be found that speak a more universal, visual language. I usually find those at the children's book department, and I think lots of beautiful children's books deserve more recognition than 'Ah, they're just fun for children'.

In Ghent for example I discovered a lovely book called Het telfeest ('The counting party'), illustrated by the talented young Belgian illustrator Soetkine Aps. Her illustrations are so joyous, bright and colorful and they really put a smile on my face. The book is aimed at children of about four years old, but i think it's colorful visual language can speak to people of all ages. I'm definitely putting the book on our baby's wish list (I seriously wonder for how long I can keep deciding what's on our baby's wish list... I bet when she's a bit like her mother that she'll take over soon!).

You are probably not heading to Norway in the near future but I thought I'd mention a couple of good book shops in Oslo (that you also would enjoy, not only Helmut ; ))
Tronsmo http://tronsmo.no/the web site is not very exciting, but you'll have the address etc.
Ark Egertorget. Ark is a standard bookstore chain, but the one situated at Egertorget (Karl Johan main street) has a great art/design section (English) and a huge magazine rack with a cafe next to it so you can actually sit down and read the magazines (which is not very common I'm afraid over here).
By the way, I made a post about the Dutch magazines you recommanded on my blog. Thanks : )

Kids' books are the best! I've been collecting the good old ones since I was in high school. Sometimes I find myself reading them (even though I'm "much too old.") Haha!

Here are some books I adored when I was little to add to your (ever-growing) wishlist:

Cissy Lavender
Island of the Blue Dolphins
the Laura Ingalls Wilder series (of course)
the Ernest and Celestine series
My Father's Dragon
The Whale Song
The Salamander Room
The Boxcar Children (I mainly remember the first book and not the other 19. The first one is just so free and exciting!)
Beatrix Potter's series

Maybe you've heard of these already, but I thought I'd suggest them anyway. The illustrations are all really excellent.

Just wanted to say hi! I used to be a midwife many years ago before I studied art and design... I have a couple of hundred's of all kinds of deliveries under my belt. At the university hospital in Bonn, Germany! (Now it's 20 years ago) Anyway! Good luck, I am sure your midwife is right and you will deliver a healthy baby, naturally!!! I'll think about you! Love your selection of kids books, I have collect them for years. German and American and British. There is so much art in them. Do you know the story of Elmar Elefant? You going to love it! xx Victoria

About Ninainvorm

I'm Nina, ceramics designer, art/ craft/ design lover and mom of Rosa and Julie. This blog is about the things I make (you can find my online shop here) and the things I love (design, art, craft, interior, fashion, photography). You may have noticed a special emphasis on my two beautiful girls and everything children's design related!

There used to be a second blog on children's clothing, Coolkidsclothes, but it's currently sort of asleep and all the images have vanished temporarily, but I hope to revitalize it real soon.

Meanwhile, lovely children's clothing will be an important part of this blog here as well.
