The chair you shouldn't sit on, the cup you shouldn't drink from and the teatowel you shouldn't use as a cleaning rag...
About me | 11 Mei 2009 | 23:13:20

My boyfriend and I seem to have a rather different attitude towards the things we have in this house. While his primary focus is function, mine usually is beauty. And sometimes those different attitudes clash terribly...

teatowels from Skinny Laminx, SpinSpin and Patapri, apron from a local shop and apron from Noeks.

Oh, I know that it may be a little hard to understand for someone who focuses on pure function that a teatowel is hanging in the kitchen just because it's a beautiful one, and not for drying the dishes. So if it's used every now and then to take a little bit of clean water off of a plate or something, I know I have to live with that. But please no, a beautiful hand-screenprinted teatowel really isn't meant to use as a cleaning rag for a dirty sink, or as a towel when you've just eaten a very juicy orange!

Of course you can't have too many chairs that people shouldn't sit on, cups that people shouldn't drink from and teatowels that people shouldn't use in your house, and I know I can get a little nasty when it comes to stuff like this. But on the other hand I find it hard to understand that for some people (I'm not mentioning any names ;)) it's all about function, and that apparently a beautiful, perfectly white teatowel with great graphic print doesn't scream 'don't spoil me' at them... And then all I can do is scream it a little louder!

These are the mugs we use for our daily coffees. Both beautiful and functional, the perfect combination in the end! ;)

HAHA! When you have the solution let me know! It's a neverending problem here with a husband and son both missing the point! I fear it can only get worse! t.x

This post has made me laugh so much. My husband gets so frustrated at not being able to use things. He just does not understand why he can't use the pretty oven mitts to take things out of the oven and must use the less pretty ones!

I am so like that but with 4 kids....ergh....my stuff all ends up being used. (The lovely things in our home end up not being as lovely after a month or so, whether I like it or not.)

Hier is het hetzelfde, voor het 'oog', voor man 'het functionele', gelukkig maar dat ik meestal de inkopen doe! En leuk schort ;)

hahaha! I like the last sentence. You are really not the instigator, you are merely conveying what the beautiful things are already shouting at him.

What a fabulous post, and I'm really thrilled to see that the mugs you bought from me are in daily use!

I love the fact that you have beautiful things that you don't use! The crochet cushion is good too!

I came over here from Apartment Therapy. I fall into the "if it's in my house, it's meant to be used, even if it is beautiful" category. I once had a roommate who was in the "don't use pretty things" category. There was much screaming on the day when I put one of her towels under the dishrack. Oh my. I like how your usable things are pretty, too, though. Great color palatte!

Hoe herkenbaar! ;)
Wat een prachtige Knorr mokken trouwens. Die heb ik nog nooit gezien.
Zijn ze vintage of heb ik wat gemist sinds ik in het buitenland woon?

oh i'm all about using the beautiful... i believe in function and beauty.  afterall, not only do you get to surround yourself with, and use, beautiful things on a daily basis, but at some point, you get to replace those worn treasures with new and different beautiful things.
i see it as a win win.
